Usually, during the course of therapy, I will use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Psychodynamic therapy.
For short-term couple therapy, Typically, I utilize psychodynamic therapy focusing on the subconscious process as manifested in the client’s current behavior patterns. The goal is to lead to the client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of past environment on their present behavior.
The approach is to enable the client to examine unresolved conflicts, past dysfunctional relationships that are manifesting on their present symptoms and maintain them.
I look at underlying behavior patterns such as the need and desire to abuse substances or rely on anger to solve unresolved problems.
During couple therapy, I focus my attention on characters of personality that hinder the healthy growth of their relationships such as
self-blame, revenge, Justice and fairness, narcissism, competition, anger and bitterness, gender inequality, dependence, toxic relation, lack of communication, not listening to each other, no sharing of household responsibilities, selfishness, criticism, pointing finger at each other, resentment, unrealistic or distorted expectations, judging, yelling and shouting and many more negative patterns.
It is a complete relearning experience for the couple to begin a new journey of expressing their feeling to each other and to communicate openly to solve their conflict especially if they still love each other and feel the value of working on their relationships.
We will try to challenge maladaptive behavior as it arises during the course of treatment
We work together generally focusing on two goals:
The first goal is to reduce or resolve maladaptive and problematic underlying behavior such as anger, substance abuse, lack of empathy, compassion in a relationship, adjustment, greed, financial discourse, and lack of intimacy in a relationship.
The 2nd goal is to improve communication skills, honesty, intimacy and respect for each other, and willingness to change to rebuild the relationship both of these are required commitments from partners.
